RTM MEMBER DAVID M. BECKER LAUNCHES EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE FOR FIRST SELECTMAN

FAIRFIELD, Conn - November 30, 2010 --- David M. Becker has launched an exploratory committee to seek the office of First Selectman in Fairfield. Becker, a Representative Town Meeting member from District-1, filed the necessary paperwork in the Town Clerk's office on Tuesday and is the first announced potential candidate in the upcoming First Selectman race.  He has pledged to actively seek the input of all citizens and voters in Fairfield

"I formed this exploratory committee because I care deeply about our community and the success of Fairfield's residents and businesses," said Becker.  "I believe that I am the leader that Fairfield needs at this crucial time where we need a long term vision that’s not influenced by short term politics, special interests, nor election cycles."

"Our town needs independent, effective leadership and I am an individual who puts partisanship aside to get things done and to lead our town," said Becker.  "My record on the RTM demonstrates my ability to work with members of both parties to seek transparency, reduce spending and to lessen the burden on the tax-weary residents of Fairfield."

A life-long Fairfield resident, Becker is a committed leader dedicated to improving government services in the Town of Fairfield.  He understands that we must slow spending and reduce the burden on our Town residents by implementing a manageable and reasonable tax level.  He will work hard to maintain existing key services in Town by applying a long-term plan to fiscal management and governance that does not simply look for quick, short-term fixes.

In November 2009, Becker was elected to serve in Fairfield’s legislative branch of government, the RTM, and received the most votes among those also elected in his district -- District One, which encompasses most of Southport and parts of the Fairfield Center and Pine Creek sections in town.   Becker was lauded early on for his campaign’s positive and grassroots approach, as well as his use of social media, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, to reach voters.  He continues to regularly update his constituents directly, through his own citizen-oriented website (www.davidbecker.com) and use of social media tools.

As a Republican, Becker is always looking for ways to reach across the aisle and work in a bi-partisan fashion.  Recently, he worked with both parties to secure a fully-independent audit of our public school system and town government to identify operational inefficiencies.

A proud product of the Fairfield Public Schools, Becker recognizes the role that Fairfield’s schools have had in his own life and he is committed to ensuring that all of our Town’s schools remain centers of academic excellence.  He believes that we can properly fund our schools, while at the same time keeping taxes and our overall budget low.

During the 2010 budget debate, Becker was quickly recognized as a fiscal leader on the RTM when he and his colleagues proceeded with an unprecedented line-by-line budget reduction for almost every department in Town, which ultimately resulted in tax savings of close to $150,000.

A champion of non-profit organizations and their role in bettering the community,  Becker currently works with several charities and non-profits.  At the Southport Volunteer Fire Department, Becker has been a volunteer firefighter over the past decade and has served in various leadership roles, including as President, and is currently on the board of directors.  Caring deeply about preserving and building upon the arts and culture in Fairfield, Becker also serves on the board of directors of the Fairfield Arts Council.  Further, Becker also volunteers his time with SoldierSocks.com, a non-profit that collects and ships tube socks and baby wipes to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Professionally, Becker is a senior-level executive at a Connecticut-based shipping logistics firm that services a wide range of companies in the medical and entertainment industries.  For the past several years, he has held various management roles, including information technology, operations, and client services responsible for a wide-range of matters, including budgeting, developing new business, and hiring, developing and managing personnel.  In addition, Becker is a partner in an established family-owned real estate investment, management, and development firm based in Fairfield.

Becker and his wife Erica live in the Fairfield Center area in town with their dog Bob. To contact Becker, please call or email at 203-424-0024 or david@davidbecker.com
